Summary

Sometimes it's necessary to remove SwyxServer to a new server machine. This article summarizes what needs to be taken into consideration.

Information

In general two different scenarios have to be distinguished:

  1. The server machine should keep its name
  2. The server machine ought to get a new name

In the first case, following steps have to be taken:

  1. Install the new Windows 2000 Server / Windows Server 2003 - assign the same name, don't connect it to the network
  2. Install the SQL-Server or MSDE, respectively
  3. Make a backup in the old server according to knowledge base article kb2220 (SwyxWare from v3.20 to v4.14) or according to chapter 4.13 of the SwyxWare Administrator Documentation (SwyxWare from v4.20).
  4. Make a backup of the SwyxWare user root directory, usually located under
    \Program Files\SwyxWare\Share\User
and the server data directory (only necessary if you manually provided additional files for all users), usually to be found at
    \Program Files\SwyxWare\Share\Data .
  5. Move the entire backup to the new server. This can either be done by usage of removable media or by copying the backups from the old server to a third machine, remove the old server from the network, connect the new machine to the network and then copy the backup onto the new server.
  6. Place the content of the user root directory and the server data directory at the same locations on the new machine as they were before on the old server.
  7. Restore the database backup according to kb2220 (SwyxWare from v3.120 to v4.14) or according to chapter 4.13 of the SwyxWare Administrator Documentation (SwyxWare from 4.20) onto the new server.
  8. Run the SwyxWare installation. After the Windows Installer part the configuration wizard will recognize the existing database and user directory and subsequently create all necessary local settings and assign the required credentials.
During the installation all limited product keys must be entered again. These keys have been enclosed in the SwyxWare shipment.
  9. After completing the installation it's necessary, to make the limited product keys permanent again. To do so go to the SwyxWare Administration and just follow the instructions to request permanent license keys.

If the sever machine ought to get a new name, the process is quite similar to setup a backup server, which gets a database replication. Therefore you should proceed as follows:

  1. Make sure that the SwyxWare services are running under a Windows domain account (not a local account).
  2. Install the new Windows 2000 Server / Windows Server 2003 - assign the new name, connect it to the network
  3. Install the SQL-Server or MSDE, respectively, at the same location as it was on the old server.
  4. Install SwyxWare into the same path as on the old server with all necessary options, you don't need to configure any users, links or other database items. Just make sure that the services are running under the same account as the services on the old server. During the installation use the lmited product keys you got with the SwyxWare shipment.
  5. Stop the SwyxWare services on the new machine.
  6. Consult knowledge base article kb2519. In contrast to what is stated in this article, you don't have to setup a scheduled task. The replication script must only run once from a user account which owns administrator previliges on both systems. Make also sure that the other prerequesites are met as mentioned in the article.
  7. After running the database replication successfully, you just have to copy the user root directory, which is usually to be found at
    \Program Files\SwyxWare\Share\User ,
and the server data directory, to be found at
    \Program Files\SwyxWare\Share\Data ,
    onto the new server machine.
  8. After completing the installation it's necessary, to make the limited product keys permanent again. To do so go to the SwyxWare Administration and just follow the instructions to request permanent license keys.

Please note, that you may have to change the settings of your DHCP or DNS server, if the IP address of the new server machine differs from the old server's. More information regarding the destribution of the SwyxServer's IP address can be found in the SwyxWare Administrator Documentation.
